Former Congressman Mondragon Kidnapped

On Saturday, Jorge Mondragon received a phone call and an e-mail from his mother in Honduras. The e-mail read, “Please pray. Your Dad’s car was found this morning with bullet holes in it. He has been kidnapped.”

Mondragon’s father, who is also named Jorge Mondragon, lives in the capital city of Tegucigalpa and often has to pass through military checkpoints.

“In the past, he’s sometimes felt that for security reasons, it just feels a little eerie,” said Mondragon, who is a student and attends school in San Diego.

Mondragon’s father owns a rum factory in Yuscaran, which is about 40 miles from Tegucigalpa. It was believed he was driving from his home in Tegucigalpa to the factory. His car was found farther east in the town of Samurano with bullet holes in it. The kidnappers have asked for $2 million in ransom but have not revealed how Mondragon’s father is doing.

“They haven’t said at all,” said Mondragon. “They haven’t said anything.”

Family members were able to obtain the kidnappers’ cell phone number but when the family calls, kidnappers do not answer the phone.

“I’m not sure why they haven’t been able to track it to pinpoint the triangulation of it,” said Mondragon.

Mondragon said local authorities have limited resources and have not done much. A private investigator is working with the family, but there are no real leads at this point.

“I’ve had a few days to just kind of grieve,” he said. “I’m praying.”

Mondragon’s father used to be a congressman in Honduras, but his son doesn’t believe he has any enemies. Also, no one knows who the kidnappers are.

Mondragon said the family can’t get the kind of money the kidnappers are asking for.

“All I’m doing is waiting,” he said.
