Former Minister Requested a Million Dollars

The acts of corruption allegedly committed by former government officials of Manuel Zelaya seem to have no end.

The Finance Minister Gabriela Nunez, appeared yesterday before the Attorney General to bring formal charges against the former Minister of Finance, Rebecca Santos, for the crime of usurpation of functions, amongst other charges.

The complaint argues that Santos appeared before the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE), requesting funding for a million dollars (about 19 million Lempiras) that would be used to finance support “for the restoration of democracy in Honduras and strengthening of regional integration”, said Nunez. It is suspected that the money would be used to fund the work of the resistance to boycott the elections. “We believe the purpose they claim for the funds was to maintain disorder and anarchy,” she said.

Santos made the million-dollar request to BCIE on behalf of the government of Honduras as a non-refundable loan, i.e. as a gift. The BCIE is an institution that aims to support the development and integration of the economy.

It is unknown whether the regional agency actually disbursed that amount or not.
