The phenomenon is affecting El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.

Jorge Solis, head of the Operations Department of the Permanent Contingency Commission (COPECO), said that following the heavy rains, a green alert for a period of 48 hours in the departments of Copan , Ocotepeque and Lempira has been issued.

“There is water saturation in the soil and there are areas prone to landslides and overflowing rivers, which is why the decision was made to declare a green alert in western Honduras,” said Solis.
