Gulf of Fonseca Warning from COPECO

The Permanent Contingency Commission (COPECO) issued a storm warning for the coastal strip of Honduras in the Gulf of Fonseca.

The commander of the Fire Department in Choluteca, Wilfredo Hernandez, said the warning extends from Punta Condega to Punta Raton. He said that at 21:39 hours today, they expect a storm surge, “Relatively small, but it could cause problems in low-lying areas.”

Hernández added that at 1:58 am on Thursday, October 7th they are expecting a tide of 3.17 meters, and at 14:24 pm the same day, a storm surge of 3.06 meters. He said that this is a typical phenomenon that occurs when the moon is positioned a certain way relative to the earth.

At that time, he said, fishermen do not go out to sea because the waves are very high and continuous. The Fire commander recalled that in the departments of Valle and Choluteca, they are still on red alert from the rains in the region.
