Health Workers on Strike in Honduras

Health Employees met yesterday to plan their actions, and implemented a work stoppage to begin at 8:00 am today for the workers of the Metropolitan Region of Health in the Central District.

The workers are demanding payment of bonuses and risk compensation for which the health workers nationwide are entitled to. The union president noted that the Secretariat officials told him that the bonuses would be credited last week; however, there was no payment for staff in the metropolitan area.

“We have many problems because authorities do not know who worked; we have no signatures for vacation pay or bonus payments,” according to the coordinator of health centers in the metropolitan area, Nili Barahona.

At least 1,300 workers for at least 25 health centers will gather at an informational meeting today to define what actions to take, “We are talking with Personnel administrators, laboratory technicians, nursing, and hospital administrative staff.”

The consultations will take place at most health centers throughout the metropolitan area.
