Heavy Rainfall – Yellow Alert Continues

According to the National Weather Service analysis, there is a south wind flowing, carrying moisture from the Central Pacific Ocean. This will generate rains accompanied by electrical activity, with the highest concentration of water in the Southern, Southeastern, Central and Western parts of the country. These rains affecting the country have prompted authorities to declare alerts and warn of flooding that may occur.

The rainfall in the West and the Sula Valley has increased the flow of the Chamelecon river, to the extent that the Executive Committee for Flood Control in the Sula Valley and COPECO have declared a yellow alert for the next 48 hours for the Chamelecon River basin; specifically for the lower areas of San Pedro Sula, Choloma, Puerto Cortes, Villanueva and La Lima.

The National Meteorological Service also said the rains may continue in the West, which means the possibility of flooding of the Chamelecon river, especially in the most vulnerable areas of the basin. The heavy rains may cause landslides due to the saturation of the soil, as well as the overflow of streams and creeks.

A yellow alert has been declared for the Departments of Choluteca, Valle, and El Paraiso, all located in the South of Honduras. Those in the Gulf of Fonseca, especially the fishermen, are being warned that waves are four feet above normal, i.e. between six and eight feet, so proper precautions should be taken.

People of the Central District are under yellow alert, and the rest of the municipalities of Francisco Morazan are at green alert. The yellow alert is maintained for 48 hours in the Ulua River basin, as the rains that have occurred in this area of the country can affect the lowland areas of the municipalities of Potrerillos, Pimienta, San Manuel and Puerto Cortes in the Department of Cortes; the same for El Progreso, Santa Rita, and El Negrito in the Department of Yoro. There is a green alert in Olancho, Lempira, Intibuc´, Ocotepeque, Copan and La Paz.
