Heavy Rains in Honduras Cause Destruction

The heavy rain in northern Honduras has stopped, having taken with it four lives and hundreds of homes and roadways. One person is missing.

The fatalities were identified as Óscar Mauricio Ordóñez Álvarez, only 19 years old, from Linaca, Choluteca; Víctor Manuel Cardona Chirinos, 20 years old, from Esparta, Atlántida; and Ramón David Green Aranda, 22 years of age, from the San Juan community in Tela, Atlántida, all members of the First Battalion of Infantry Marines based in La Ceiba.

The three soldiers were in the Honduran Navy and searching in the river for one Lorenzo Cruz. They died when forceful currents swept over the vessel, causing them to lose control of the boat, which overturned and killed three of the four young men aboard. Mr. Lorenzo Cruz, 74, also died from the heavy rains. Sergeant Rodas Estrada survived the tragedy.

Luis Miguel Castillo, who works as a park guard for Cuero y Salado Ecological Reserve, has been reported missing. Relief agencies are still searching for him.

In the Municipality of Santa Rosa de Aguán, in the department of Colón, torrential rains flooded fields, causing the loss of 1,810 manzanas of rice. Also lost were 150 manzanas of corn and 30 manzanas of beans. According to the Mayor of Santa Rosa de Aguán, the Aguán river from the La Burra bridge has overflown, causing the town to be cut off.

In the low lying areas near the Aguán river, the flooding has taken 362 heads of cattle, swept away by the strong river currents. The heavy rains also destroyed six homes in the community of La Quince, and 15 homes in Los Encuentros.

In the town of Omoa in the department of Cortés, at least five homes were destroyed by the strong currents of the rivers flowing through the community, and several roads were flooded.
