Honduras Approves Cremation

The Special Law of Cremation (Ley Especial de Cremación) has taken effect, which now allows the incineration of corpses and human remains in Honduras. The Decree was published in the Gazette after its approval in the National Congress of Honduras.

Before now, the cremation of corpses in Honduras could only be authorized by the Ministry of Health in cases of an epidemic. However, with the new law, the process of the incineration of a corpse or human remains is permitted if requirements outlined in this regulation are fulfilled.Honduras Approves Cremation

The Ministry of Health or local health authorities are responsible for issuing the legal and technical regulations for the cremation of corpses and human remains, and also are responsible for authorizing the operation of any public or private crematoria in the country. They are additionally responsible for regulating and supervising the operation of the crematoria at the institutions engaged in this activity.
The cost of a cremation in Honduras is estimated to cost 16,000 to 20,000 lempiras. The ashes may then be deposited in urns of wood, metal or glass.
