Honduras Awarded 4G Bands

The National Commission of Telecommunications (Conatel – Comisión Naciional de Telecomunicaciones) announced today that the Mexican company América Móvil was awarded Tuesday a license to offer internet mobile high speed, known as fourth-generation, or “4G”, in Honduras, as it continues its expansion into mobile services in the region.

Honduras has been granted two bands of 4G mobile through América Móvil and Millicom, for 24.1 million dollars in an auction, announced Conatel. Both companies dominate the local market of mobile telephony and internet.

The State awarded to Millicom, which operates locally as the brand name Tigo, one of the bands for 12.05 million dollars, and one to América Móvil, which in Honduras is known as Claro, for 12.05 million dollars, said the Conatel Director of the Office of Regulation and Markets, Pyubani Williams.

Both companies should begin to operate the bands in no later than 18 months, and its operation will improve the speed and capacity of its internet, broadband and mobile telephony services, up to 10 times, he added.

Hondutel Reserves First 4G band in Honduras.

The Government of Tegucigalpa immediately booked a band of 4G for the State’s national telephone company  (Hondutel – Empresa Nacional de Telecomunicaciones), which faces a precarious financial situation, and wishes to make the company more attractive to a possible international investor.

América Móvil, owned by Mexican Tycoon Carlos Slim, has about 22 million cellular phone subscribers in Central America and the Caribbean.
On Tuesday the shares of América Móvil closed with an increase of 3.31 percent on the Mexican stock exchange, priced at 13.43 pesos.
