Honduras Cell Phone Companies Tigo and Claro at War!

Honduran telecommunication  company Tigo, a part of Sweden’s Millicom is suing its rival Claro, a unit of America Movil, for what it called an “unfair” advertising campaign.

Tigo said it is seeking damages of 280 million lempiras ($13 million) from Claro, which it accuses of putting out “abusive propaganda that denigrates and discredits (its) products and services” and is tantamount to “unfair competition.”

In Honduras since 1986, Tigo dominates the cellphone market with 4.9 million of the country’s 7.5 million users, according to Honduras’ telecommunication regulator Conatel. Claro has the rest of the market.

Claro has launched a publicity campaign supporting new measures, which come into effect at the end of April, that would allow Honduran cell phone users to change provider while keeping the same number (A Law that actually went into effect last September but both Tigo and Claro have postponed it due to “technical difficulties”).

Claro has declined to comment on the case.

Editors Note: Now if they could just pass a law in Honduras that prevents Tigo and in particular Claro from sending out a zillion text messages daily getting their users to spend money on things they do not need to be spending money on! It is a royal pain when you have both sim chips on the same phone; text messages never stop and the important ones get lost in the shuffle.
