Honduras Files Complaint to International Court of Justice

As officially announced by the Foreign Ministry, the Honduran Ambassador, Julio Rendon Barnica, “acting as an agent of the Republic of Honduras before the International Court of Justice, filed an application against the Federal Republic of Brazil, for legal issues relating to diplomatic situations and the principle of non-intervention in matters within the domestic jurisdiction of the State “.

In a statement by the Foreign Ministry, they explained that the basis of the application is the commission of crimes by Brazil and international responsibility in relation to its obligations under the United Nations Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

“The government of the Republic reserves the right to ask the Court to adopt provisional or protective measures to stop illegal activities of the Brazilian government, which alter the internal public order of Honduras and threaten the peaceful development of the electoral process in the country. “

Honduras could also request compensation for damages.

The complaint by the government and people of Honduras, came about because the South American country provided the facilities of its embassy in Tegucigalpa for the ousted president Manuel Zelaya, and made it his refuge.

After the arrival of Zelaya in Tegucigalpa in September, the country has experienced more turmoil as the former president has spurred an insurrection, while entrenched within the Brazilian embassy.

That demmand should include that Zelaya be asked to get out from the embassy so that he can then be taken to Court to face his accusers for damages done to Honduras.

Brazil has gone far and beyond what is acceptable for a Government to do in support of the political beliefs that it itself has.

Lula is a Socialist, and that is fine by him, and if the people of Brazil chose him to be their leader, is fine by them.

We as Hondurans do not have a problem with that, it was their democratic choice and it is to be respected.

Now, how come is it that we can not get the same from Brazil? Recent history shows that Honduras has rejected Socialism/Communism as a form of government for many decades already, we still feel like that, we still reject it.

Zelaya was trying to change the form of government in Honduras to make it just that, and in his attempt to do so he broke the laws of our country, unfortunally for him, one of the laws he broke is spelled out in the Constitution as having a preassigned type of punishment if incurred in a violation of it, and that is the article # 239 of the Constitution, and what hapenned later is “Recorded History”.

So, as Hondurans we ask tyhe Brazilian people, please demmand from your President an explanation as to why is he trying to do in Honduras something that would not be accepted in your country, and that is to disrecptect your choice of political leadership and your Constitution.
