Allan Gutierrez sets a Florida Southern record in the 500 freestyle

Honduras Olympic Swimmer Alan Gutierrez will swim the 400-meter freestyle for Honduras in the Olympics. The first Olympian in Florida Southern College history holds the NCAA record in 800 freestyle relay, All-American in 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay, and 800 freestyle relay. Holds Florida Southern College records in 500 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle, and 100 freestyle relay.

“Allan is a great kid,” said Duncan Sherrard, who coaches both men’s and women’s swimming at FSC. “He’s always willing to work hard and do what it takes to be successful.”

He was born and raised in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, to a doctor and a lawyer. He has two younger sisters who he says make life “interesting.”

He first took up swimming as a hobby 13 years ago, at age 6.

In his junior year, he set the Central American and Caribbean record for the 50-meter butterfly. He was a part of the Delfines Sampedranos Club Team, the top-ranked club team in the country, for four years.

When he found out that he had a good enough year to be able to represent Honduras in the Olympics, Gutierrez was ecstatic.

“I was really happy,” he said. “I was thanking God, my family and my coaches. Everybody was sending congratulations through Facebook or by the phone, which I really appreciated.”
