Hondutel Subscribers May Pay for Mismanagement

The mismanagement Hondutel has had in the past four years could be paid by landline users.

According to recent reports, the state closed with losses of 220 million Lempiras. This was due to the mass recruitment of employees and wasteful projects that boosted expenses.

One proposal for the financial recovery of Hondutel, is to cut staff and ultimately increase the cost of land lines. Currently, subscribers pay 307.10 Lempiras to have a land line installed, but this fee could be increased to 353.90 lempiras this year, to 439.70 Lempiras in 2011, and elevated to 541.10 Lempiras in 2012. Such is the proposal from the Unit of Planning, Evaluation and Management of Hondutel (UPEG).

That public company plans to install 180,000 lines between 2010-2013; 45,000 lines per year, which would translate into revenue in the amount of 80 million Lempiras.

Other measures under consideration are the expansion of fixed telephony, the introduction of new technologies to provide new services, and auditing of services. Hondutel may also look for a strategic partner for mobile phone service, preferably international, which previously has meant losses to the state telecommunications.

Funny, but it seems to me that just by recuperating all the money stolen in the last year it would be enough to cover all of those expenses.

But Honduras being what it is, let us charge it to the people, why dont we.
