Intense Hurricane Season Expected This Year

Scientists at the University of Colorado have updated the hurricane season forecast this year for the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

After reviewing statistical models, and the evolution of oceanic and atmospheric conditions, estimates are that hurricane activity will be stronger this year than the historical average. They believe that in the coming months, we will experience 16 named storms, of which nine would be hurricanes, and five of which will be intense. According to the forecast, the probability that at least one tropical storm will pass within 80 miles of our country is very high, 77 percent.

An important aspect of this forecast is that what is expected in the coming months is very similar to what happened in 1998 and 2005. In 1998, was Hurricane Mitch, and in 2005, the country was affected by Stan, Wilma, Beta, and Gamma.
