Jamaican Perspective on Fishing Boat

Two men were injured Friday night as the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Coast Guard intercepted yet another Honduran fishing vessel in Jamaican waters.

The JDF Coast Guard said the vessel was intercepted after its movement, just southwest of the Pedro Cays, raised suspicions.

The vessel was discovered approximately 6:53 p.m. while the JDF Coast Guard was conducting patrols based on information that illegal fishing was taking place on the banks near the Pedro Cays.

According to a release from the Ministry of National Security, the coastguard attempted to intercept and board the vessel and, during the process, the two Honduran crewmen were injured.

The injured Hondurans were taken to a medical facility for treatment while the fishing vessel continued southward back towards Honduras.

The report did not provide information on how the two crewmen were injured or the nature of their injuries. The report also failed to outline why the vessel was allowed to continue on to Honduras without other crew members being processed.

However, The Gleaner has learned that shots were fired during the incident.

This latest event comes just weeks after the coastguard swooped down on two fishing vessels along the southwest of the Pedro Cays during the Christmas holidays. The two fishing vessels were found in possession of 300 pounds of lobster. The men were arrested and charged.
