Judge Says Supreme Court To Hear Zelaya Case

Judge Claudio Aguilar said Friday that he can’t hear the corruption case against ousted former head of state Manuel Zelaya, because Zelaya is now a high-ranking public official.

Zelaya holds a seat in the Central American Parliament, a strategic move thought to hinder the ex-president from serving jail time because such a position could entitle him to diplomatic immunity. Former Honduran President Roberto Micheletti chose not to seek a position in the Parliament, a right afforded ex-presidents in Central America.

Judge Aguilar says the Supreme Court must hear the charges of improperly withdrawing government funds and falsifying documents based on Zelaya’s position.
