Laid-Off Workers May Be Back

In an effort to combat the economic crisis Honduras is facing, the business sector of the country it trying to reinstitute all workers who were dismissed this year as a result of the increase in the minimum wage.

The president of the Honduran Council of Private Companies, [Consejo Hondureño de la Empresa Privada (Cohep)], Almilcar Bulnes, maintained that they will have a discussion over the next several days with the new authorities of the Secretary of Labor [Secretaría del Trabajo] in order to explain this new measure in favor of the workers.

As far as the payment of the new wage base, Bulnes said that this has already become law, and therefore cannot be overturned, despite companies asking to be able to negotiate with an employee their pay when reinstated.

Bulnes did admit that only 30 percent of small companies are currently able to pay the wage increase.
