Plane Diverted to San Pedro Sula

An Aerocaribbean Avion de Transport Regional ATR-72-200, registration CU-T1547 performing flight 7L-862 from Managua (Nicaragua) to Havana (Cuba) with 57 passengers, was enroute over Honduras near San Pedro Sula (Honduras) when cabin crew discovered a bag containing ice and aluminium cans with imprint “Cristal” containing some unknown gaseous substances. Flight crew unable to rule out a bomb decided to divert to San Pedro Sula for a safe landing.

Bomb sniffing dogs indicated explosives two times. A bomb squad removed the bag, supposedly a beer ice bag, from the aircraft and using C4 plastic explosives detonated the bag. The destruction of the bag prevented identification whether the bag indeed contained inflammables or explosives.

The passengers were taken to hotels for an overnight stay in San Pedro Sula, the aircraft continued to Havana the following day after it was established that none of the passengers had brought the bag on board.

Incident: Aerocaribbean AT72 near San Pedro Sula on Sep 10th 2011, security alert.
