President Promises Aid

Manuel Zelaya Rosales, promised aid to the families who lost their house because of the earthquake. Zelaya said in chain of radio and television spots that Honduras has had the luck of not undergoing a tragedy of great magnitude, in spite of the force of the earthquake.

Although other countries have suffered major damages with earthquakes of smaller intensity, the damages were smaller in Honduras, according to the experts, because the epicenter of the earthquake was 130 kilometers north of the Caribbean coast. The funds are expected to be provided by an organization that is backed by Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez. Zelaya indicated the funds will be give directly to victims, in coordination with several Government institutions.

Zelaya said that Honduras has received messages of solidarity from several countries in Latin America, International Programs, and Ambassadors
