Prison Fire in Santa Barbara, Honduras

A fire broke out that destroyed the prison and a public market in Santa Barbara, Honduras. The flames also destroyed the House of Culture, and approximately 50 stalls in the market. According to preliminary reports given by Colonel Ramon Salgado of the Fire Department in Santa Barbara, the fire was controlled in the morning, and it is thought that it may have started by the explosion of a gas cylinder or electric shock.

“With all the smoke and confusion … 79 prisoners escaped, but 76 were recaptured, and only three are fugitives,” police spokesman Commissioner Orlin Cerrato said.

Police shot and wounded eleven inmates who attempted to flee the prison.

All the injured received medical treatment for bullet wounds. Seven of them left the hospital and are in good health, and four others are still in the hospital. Two of the four, remain in intensive care in hospital Santabarbarense, Reinaldo Amaya and Francisco Pineda. The other two, Wilmer Garcia and Jimenez Wenscelao, are being operated on by medical personnel.

The 364 inmates who did not escape were taken to the emergency and municipal stadium. The three current escapees are Salvador Cardona, [robbery], Joel Varela Aceituno [manslaughter] and Jose Ramon Rivera [manslaughter].
