Strong Winds Cause Damage

Strong winds damaged dwellings, knocked down power lines, destroyed crops and killed livestock in central and eastern Honduras, officials said on Sunday.

The winds tore the roofs off about 15 dwellings Saturday in the southern section of Tegucigalpa, where several electric poles were also toppled, Congresswoman Doris Gutierrez and a fire department spokesman said.

In Campamento, a city in the eastern province of Olancho, dwellings were damaged, trees were toppled and several head of cattle died, a correspondent for Radio Cadena Voces said.

About 20 families were affected in Campamento when the powerful winds sent the roofs of their dwellings “flying,” Radio Cadena Voces said.

Campamento residents told the radio station they thought a hurricane was coming.

Heavy rains also pounded parts of Honduras on Saturday afternoon and into the night, but no damage was reported from the downpours.

The rainy season started last week in Honduras, where a woman and her 15-year-old daughter died in the Caribbean city of Puerto Cortes.

No bad weather has been reported in La Ceiba or the northern areas of Honduras
