Taxi Drivers Wreak Havoc

Taxi and bus drivers in Tegucigalpa took to the streets this morning blocking access to the Department of Public Works, Transportation and Housing (Soptravi), demanding a ban on issuing new operating permits for buses and taxis in the capital of Honduras.

The drivers threaten to continue causing problems indefinitely, saying the new director of transportation has approved permits for 600 new vehicles along city routes.

Transportation drivers are emphatic that Tegucigalpa has enough buses and taxis, like the rest of the country, and they are demanding that Soptravi investigate the department responsible for issuing permits.

Taxi drivers stated they will not rule out a national strike if Soptravi does not respond positively to their demands.

This is exactly what happens when you allow the donkey to lead the cart.

The economy of a country works best when it is based on the simple principle of supply and demand, this normally leads to better prices and quality of service because of the competition for customers.

Who are the bus and taxi drivers to determine if there are enough buses and taxis, seem all they want to do is guarantee that they can charge their passengers whatever they want, since when there is no choice, you have to use what you have.
