Teachers take over Fuerzas Armadas Boulevard in Tegucigalpa

Hundreds of public school teachers in Honduras took over the Fuerzas Armadas Boulevard in Tegucigalpa demanding the payment of 2,500 million lempiras in cash the government owes to the Inprema (Instituto de Previsión del Magisterio) since last year, among other demands.

The action that lasted approximately one hour before the teachers determined they would go on an indefinite strike in Francisco Morazan until the problem is resolved.

There are no classes for public schools at the head of all the 18 departments in Honduras because teachers having on information assemblies where they will decide what other actions they will take.

The government accumulated a debt by not transferring the discounts that make up every teachers monthly salary to the Imprema and because they stopped paying the monthly fee the State has to pay as employer.

The vice-minister of Finances, Hugo Castillo, offered to make the payment thru bonuses but the education leadership rejected his proposal and wants the payment transfer in cash.

The minister of Education will meet with president Zelaya on Tuesday. If there is no solution to the demands, the strike will continue the next day.

Education also demands the opening of new plazas and rejects the decision of the minister of Education to reduce their pay according to qualification that consists of increases every time the teacher improves and obtains a new academic title.
