Teachers will stop Primary Elections if Government doesn’t Pay their Salaries

The education leaders gave an ultimatum to the government to pay the salaries of over seven thousand teachers that have not received pay in months, if the government does not pay them in the next eight days, they will take over all the schools and stop the internal elections that are scheduled for November 30th.

The education leaders gathered yesterday morning at the Central Vicente Caceres Institute, where they decided to continue with their plan to boycott the primary elections and to hold the school year notes.

Later that afternoon, the minister of Education, Marlon Breve, summoned the education leaders at the offices of the Instituto de Prevision del Magisterio (Inprema). In this meeting, the minister promised the teachers their salary. They also created a commission to analyze the situation of over five thousand teachers, this way they can decide if they can or can’t pay their salaries.

They also have to decide if 2,300 teachers from Francisco Morazan, whose documents where not transferred to the roster, can receive their salaries.

The documents belonging to these teachers must be delivered today to the new Departmental director in Francisco Morazan to start analyzing them immediately.

Nevertheless, the pressure was made by the professors who demanded they get their salaries in the next few days. If this condition isn’t met, they will take over the public schools on November 25th.

The government, thru the Secretary of Finance, approved 300 million lempiras to pay the teachers salaries. This amount was not contemplated in the budget for the education sector of all the country.
