The Spain striker scored twice, hit the crossbar and missed a penalty against the Central American side, but he also struck the Honduras defender Emilio Izaguirre in the face as they waited for a free-kick to be taken towards the end of the first-half.
The Japanese referee, Yuichi Nishimura, took no action but Fifa will need to establish whether he would have booked or dismissed Villa had he seen the incident.
“At the moment we have no information on David Villa. We will wait for the referee’s report before making any decisions,” said a Fifa spokesman.
Villa told Spanish broadcaster Canal Plus: “It’s not something that I am proud of. They’re just instincts, in this case I wasn’t expecting [Izaguirre] to tread on me. I was merely standing there and the reaction was to stick my arm out. I’ll try in future to keep my cool.”
Fifa, meanwhile, have confirmed that South Africa’s appeal against the red card shown to their goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, in last week’s defeat to Uruguay has been rejected, meaning he will be suspended for today’s final Group A match against France.”
